A critical review of the Marimekko Exhibition

Marimekko: Fabrics, Fashion, Architecture, is an exhibition that considers the remarkable history of the company from its founding through today and examines Marimekko’s impact on design globally.[1] The company designs, manufactures and markets high-quality clothing, interior decoration textiles, bags and other accessories under the Marimekko brand. Without doubt, Marimekko is one of the great success stories in the history of 20th century design. The Marimekko Corporation was originally established in 1951 by visionary textile designer Armi Ratia and her husband, Viljo in Finland and it is deeply linked to Finland. Marimekko became internationally known and it is as highly successful as Nokia[2] in foreign markets in the 60s. The Marimekko trademark is registered in 58 countries today.[3]

Marimekko revolutionized design for over half a century and its signature prints were progressive, edgy, and comfortable as it represents Finland around the word. It is one kind of life manner, and, the exhibition catalogue argues: ‘it introduced a highly original vocabulary to the fields of fashion and home design.’[4] Those talented designers in Marimekko boldly create something new and avant-garde. They committed to Marimekko’s basic philosophy – design is inspired by beautiful everyday life. The designs are wonderfully cheerful and buoyant; many designs have become world-famous classics over the years.[5]

The Marimekko Exhibition I have visited in the Lighthouse in Glasgow is fantastic and well organized. They have also provided full information. Not only did they offer many information boards with details of the historical and cultural context of the work, but also supplied some magazines about Marimekko. They furnished TV and slides and chairs with Marimekko’s symbol pattern. The pattern was printed on the wall as well and the Marimekko signature style fabrics are hanging from the ceiling. In my opinion, I think it is the best way to display the fabrics as the fabrics are long and vast. The fashion clothes are put on the exhibition stages beside other exhibits and the stages are also printed with Marimekko’s fabric patterns. The architecture scale models are displayed in a glass box and there are some transparent patterns on the glass box which I think it is not clean and clear. There is another thing which I do not like in the exhibition is the lighting. I feel the exhibition is a bit dark and makes the exhibits dim. Without those two cases, everything in the exhibition is amazing. In summary, the exhibition is successful and the layout is related to Marimekko’s modern and contemporary Scandinavian design.

Marimekko’s fabrics are extremely creative designs with rich range of different worlds of patterns and bright colours. The fabrics were printed off the large pattern repeats of some designs which I think it is like Bridget Riley’s[6] printing. They are both audacious and extraordinary designs which catch people’s eyes. However, to compare with Marimekko’s fabrics patterns, the dense repeating patterns of Bridget Riley’s make people feel giddy while watching. Undoubtedly Marimekko’s bold fabric is more vibrant and the sequence patterns look more clearly with its brightly colours and the special modern shapes like polka dots and stripes. I am particularly like the classics unikko poppy flowers patterns[7] as it is eye-catching and beautiful design. Marimekko’s fabrics is symbolic and popular, in particular, Marimekko became a huge success in modernism design.

In addition to Marimekko’s excellent fabrics, Marimekko’s fashion design reflects modernity as a strong fabric pattern complemented a garment with simple lines. In my point of view, I think Marimekko’s fashion design is instantly recognizable and stylish. Marimekko's classic collection offers beautiful and comfortable clothes and the eye is attracted to bold stripes which accentuate the geometric shapes of the garments

Marimekko’s architecture design is exciting and colourful in excellent techniques and simple shapes. The Marimekko designers designed the wonderful large window areas and strong colour walls which are unlike other buildings and it is a great idea of designing a modern building like that. On the other hand, Marimekko’s architecture design represented modernism.

Admittedly, I think the exhibition is for everybody as fashion is popular and Marimekko’s products are modernist items which everybody might use. As additionally, the products are focused on modern materials and the fashion clothing is chiefly made from pure natural materials. Along with clothing, Marimekko has established interior decoration and bags as its main product lines. This exhibition presents the Marimekko designers’ mastery of texture, colour, line, and shape that continues to dazzle audiences and influence design students. For instance, as a design student, I am particularly interested in the way Marimekko designers create colours and the shapes. Due to Marimekko’s diversity, it is a successful lifestyle brand for every one. Therefore, everybody can be interested in this exhibition.

In conclusion, the exhibition conveys the unique modern vision of the Marimekko Company and how they revolutionized modern printed fabrics and fashion. Owing to Marimekko used natural materials and more organic forms, strong colours in its great designs, Marimekko is a model of modern lifestyles.
