正文: Edinburgh Castle and the Great Wall of China I have been studying in Edinburgh for two years. I have found out that the visual culture of Edinburgh is completely different from China and there are lots of things which interest me. I am fond of on the gothic buildings which I can never see in China and I like the ancient feeling of them.
One of the most evocative buildings I have visited is the Edinburgh castle where situated on a volcanic plug at the head of a crag-and-tail geological feature at the city centre. The castle is Edinburgh's best known and most popular tourist attraction in a city filled with history. It is a good idea to visit the castle first when visits to this historic city. Not only because of the historical interest of this remarkable fortress and former royal residence, but because it offers such splendid panoramic views of the city. From the battlements of the castle I get an overview of the city and the surrounding terrain, laid out before me, so that I immediately appreciate the dramatic topography of Edinburgh situated between sea and hills. The massive castle on the rock huddled close to the wall for protection.
Within the confines of the Castle, there is much to see. The castle includes several important buildings such as the Great Hall with its ornate wooden ceiling. On display in the Great Hall is an interesting collection of weapons and armor. Walking across the square is the Scottish National War Memorial, a building designed and constructed shortly after the First World War. The castle is both a historic monument and a working military establishment, being the headquarters of the Scottish Division.
Similarly as the Edinburgh Castle, the Great Wall of China is perhaps the most supreme wonder of the world. It is the only building which can be recognized by satellite and is also one of the largest building construction projects ever completed. Snaking across the mountaintops, its viewers are in awe at so much bulky building material having been used in such inaccessible places. The Great Wall was the key to protecting agriculture and it was originally built of stone, wood, grass and earth. It is the world's largest single cultural relic -- and the world's largest single cultural relic’s protection challenge, in a rapidly changing part of the world. There is a famous Chinese proverb about the Great Wall, which says "Not been on the Great Wall, not a great man". The proverb is much concise in Chinese. I feel obliged to write something about the Great Wall not only because of this proverb, but also more importantly because of the Great Wall itself. The Great Wall is now the symbol of China. It is like a huge dragon which has been lying on the vast land for centuries and seems to be just awakening.
In conclusion, I’m fond of both Edinburgh Castle and the Great Wall of China as they are the symbols of the city or country, packed with history. As well as this are much as I like Edinburgh Castle there are other places which can claim to be its equal even though they are different, for example, the Pyramids and so on, the most famous buildings, ancient or modern, in the world today.
